VOLUNTEER TEACHERS NEEDED!
The Financial Literacy Committee of the CFA Society of San Francisco and Junior Achievement are pleased to offer an opportunity to CFA Society members to teach financial literacy topics to children at Edna Maguire School in Mill Valley (Southern Marin county). There are 15 classes in grades K-5 that require a volunteer to teach one class (less than one hour) a week for five weeks this spring. Exact timing is flexible and can be arranged between the teacher and volunteer. Volunteers are welcome to pair up to co-teach or split up the 5 week commitment. Junior Achievement will provide all materials and a one-hour training session (in downtown SF) for all volunteers in late February or early March. For more information or to sign up, please contact Tanya Steinhofer, CFA at tshaw_mba99@alumni.haas.org or 415-399-9159.
Junior Achievement is a non-profit founded in 1916 whose mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. For more information, visit http://www.ja.org.
STOCK PICKING GAME The Committee is sponsoring teams to participate in the San Francisco Chronicle and Wells Fargo Bank produced Stock Market Game. Last year 34 schools participated in the program. The website for the game is www.stockmarketgame.org.
WALL STREET JOURNAL EDUCATION EDITIONCFASF's Financial Literacy Committee is proud to sponsor 74 Bay Area high school libraries and classrooms through this program. By providing high school students with the education edition of the Journal, it exposing them to the publication and gives them an understanding of the financial markets. After several years of involvement, the Committee is now working to ensure that all appropriate schools are receiving the paper and are making the best use of it for their students. For more information go to http://www.wsjclassroomedition.com/index.html.
SCHOOL-TO-CAREERThe committee is lending support to the San Francisco Unified School District School-to-Career regional occupational program. The program's objective is to make education relevant through "pathway programs." Currently, business/finance academies have been established at two high schools, where the structure and curriculum of the National Academy Foundation in New York is followed.
In addition to math and reading, this academy offers economic, financial planning and accounting electives. Also, paid internships for 11th grade students are arranged during the summer break with local companies. For 12th graders, the program builds on the internship experience by providing the opportunity to take a community college course in the topic.
