Event Description:
Oil has been the world's primary energy source for the past 50 years. But what does it say about the remaining supply of Oil that the world is now poised to transition back to Coal? Increasingly, the developed countries from Europe to Japan to the United States appear trapped between a plateau in global Oil production, and the unquenchable thirst for energy from Asia and the developing world. There may be no better lens through which to understand these pressures, than the state of California. Built out extensively after WW2, California leveraged the power of cheap, energy-dense Oil to adopt highways and roads as its primary transport system. We will look at the effects of trying to run such a system in a new era of high priced Oil, and the overall economic challenge for California in a time of energy transition.

Gregor Macdonald runs the popular energy and economics blog: www.gregor.us. He has written for the Financial Times of London, The Oil Drum, and had his work republished in the English edition of Pravda (in Russia). He has appeared on MSNBC in the United States, and on BNN in Toronto. His writings and views have been cited in the New York Times, The Financial Times, The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, WIRED, and the Oil And Gas Journal. Originally from Eastern Massachusetts, Gregor did his undergraduate degree at Denison University in Ohio, and his graduate degree at the University of Iowa. He has lived and worked in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Wellington - New Zealand, and London. He currently makes his home in Amherst, Massachusetts with his wife and two children.
