Event Description:
For the grand finale of the ETF School Mini-Series, we move out of the classroom into the Financial District for a special 4-hour joint event with the SF Financial Planning Association (FPA) to see ETFs in action by practitioners. With the proliferation of ETFs, rules-based liquid alternatives, and new indexing strategies, the promise of actively structured passive portfolios has been realized. The liquidity, transparency, superior diversification, tax efficiency, and flexibility of these portfolios have considerably raised the bar on traditional alpha-centric methods of adding value to client portfolios. The San Francisco Bay Area is the home of many of the leaders of this revolution. This special program will feature three local firms whose integrated presentations will be moderated by Matt Hougan. All three firms offer solutions that are accessible both to advisors and individuals. Ted Lucas will present on how to construct deeply integrated, robust, and fully liquid portfolios that are optimized to multiple measures of risk, a process that starts with much finer building blocks than the traditional asset classes, and ends with functional sleeves that are intuitive to the advisor and lend themselves to robustly customized solutions. Paul Touchstone will discuss how to use an ETF portfolio as a base for a risk-controlled and integrated harvesting of diverse sources of return; such as the innovation of an ETF options overlay that reduces volatility and path dependency, makes rebalancing more efficient, and increasing diversification; as well as extracting additional value through securities lending, tax loss harvesting, and structural optimization at the custodian level. Ran Leshem will present on how to design and implement fully customized indexes that can integrate thematic beta, custom screening, and tax loss harvesting optimization, going beyond the boundaries of what is possible with pure ETF portfolios.
