Author:Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy
Chair(s): John T. Hyland, CFA
Event Description:
In 2005, long-time oil industry investment banker Matthews Simmons shocked the world with his best-selling book Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy. In his detailed analysis, Mr. Simmons disputed the notion that Saudi Arabia has the ability to substantially increase its oil production over the next few decades to help supply the world's growing energy needs as most energy analysts had assumed. Rather Mr. Simmons suggested that it would struggle just to maintain current levels, with enormous consequences for the global economy. ( To read more about the book, please go to Book Information)

Mr. Simmons will discussed how the oil and energy sector is both very important and yet poorly understood, how reliable data is difficult to come by, and why an energy crisis is rapidly approaching both the US and the global economies. Given that energy production is the largest industrial activity in the world, and that inexpensive energy is a cornerstone of modern economic life, Mr. Simmons' views on the energy outlook for this century should be of great interest to all investment professionals.

This event is co-sponsored by the National Association of Petroleum Investment Analysts (NAPIA), a not-for-profit group of investment professionals with a focus on the energy sector.

Matthew R. Simmons graduated cum laude from the University of Utah and received a Masters degree with distinction in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He then served on the faculty as a research associate for two years. In 1974, he founded Simmons & Company International. He is past Chairman of the National Ocean Industries Association and a trustee of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Associates - Harvard Business School and past President of the Harvard Business School Alumni Association. He serves as a Board Member of Brown-Forman Corporation, the Center for Houstons Future, Houston Technology Center, ICIC and The Atlantic Council of The United States of America. He is also a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.
