Event Description: |
George P. Shultz has served as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Labor and State. Additionally, he has served as Chairman of the President's Economic Policy Advisory Board, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, President of the Bechtel Group and Dean of the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. He is a Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution and a Distinguished Fellow at the American Economic Association.
He is also Chairman of the California Governor's Council of Economic Advisors and Co-Chairman of the Committee on the Present Danger. He is an Emeritus Director of the Charles Schwab Corporation. He is a member of the board of directors of Fremont Group and Accretive Health. He is Chairman of the J. P. Morgan Chase International Council and Chairman of the Accenture Energy Advisory Board.
He is the recipient of several awards including: the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, the Seoul Peace Prize, the Eisenhower Medal for Leadership and Service, the Reagan Distinguished American Award, the Richardson Prize for Excellence and Integrity in Public Service, the Doolittle Award and the Witherspoon Medal for Distinguished Statesmanship. Additionally, a National Foreign Service Training Center in Arlington, Virginia has been named after him.
His publications include Implications of the Reykjavik Summit on Its Twentieth Anniversary: Conference Report, Economic Policy Beyond the Headlines, his best-selling memoir, Turmoil and Triumph: My Years as Secretary of State, his monograph, Economics in Action: Ideas, Institutions, Policies. Additionally, he authored Economic Policy Beyond the Headlines; Workers and Wages in the Urban Labor Market; Guidelines, Informal Controls, and the Market Place; Management Organization and the Computer; and Labor Problems: Cases and Readings.
Shultz graduated from Princeton University in 1942, receiving a B.A. degree in economics. That year he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served through 1945. In 1949, Shultz earned a Ph.D. degree in industrial economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. |
